"Any cat experts out there?"

Does anyone out there have personal knowledge of the American Bobtail cat's personality vs. the British Shorthair cat's personality? I have done about all I can with the net to search, so now--to reach an educated decision--I am going public. Meow and thanks!

i dunno, all my cats have come from cardboard boxes in front of supermarkets and they ROCK!

you might want to call some rescue societies, i'm sure they exist for both breeds. the people that run them will probably talk your ear off about every detail of the respective personalities.

also, try posting this on the "animal" section of www.craigslist.org.

A true Bobcat is a wild animal. Your chances of getting one with a pleasant personality are slim at best. I know where there area lot of those, still wild.

I second the suggestion to check with the rescue societies or the Humane Society.

I mean come on people! I like being discrete as much as the next poster but how are we supposed to decipher all this? Cardboard boxes? Supermarkets? American Bobcat? I'm game! But please post a proper review so we can all know where, when and how much!

I'm gettin' board with Amping and my ATF left town. I could really do with something kinky like getting a little kitty in an anounymous cardboard box at the Supermarket. I mean, how HOT is that? The risk, the chance at getting caught, the unknown element of it all?

Damn! Give me details. Is it the Marina Safeway? Whole Foods on California? Where man, where??

05/02/98 Scully & Mulder
Phone: n/a
Found: Bryant & 17th Safeway
Price: free
Descr: Six week old gray tabbies with green eyes. Cute as buttons. Picked from a litter that inluded an all gray kitty and a black and white kitty, i have a thing for grey tabbies so i knew they were perfect for me.
Review: They were good kitties. YMMV. I got them from a cardboard box so they had to go to the vet right away, there was an xtra $$ for that, but I had budgeted for it and had four fifty dollar bills folded up in my front shirt pocket so I wouldn't be tempted to spend more, maybe even stopping my Sammy's Pet World for one of those sheepskin pet beds. They have a tendancy to make a lot of noise, but definitely not clock watchers, it's been four years now and they are still here. Their lapdances are very G rated and are better described as lapnaps, but what can you do. You get what you pay for.

Looks: Mulder face 9, body 9 Beautiful fur, soft
Scully face 7.5, body 7.5 -- marking aren't as nice, but has a real sweet nature.
Attitude: 8 -- 10 if they've been given tuna
Service: 8, would go up if they'd change their own cat box

I used to have a book on pure breed cats that described their personalities and how suitable each type were as pets. Some are NOT. I don't recall what they said about these breeds. I would suggest going to a book store and looking in their pet/animal sections. Also some larger pet stores probably have books on pure breed cats.

Here's some stuff I found with basic Web searching:
A good overall listing of pure breed cats:
http://www.geocities.com/abecedarius/Cats.html

American Bobtail
http://abeboptail.homestead.com/bebop1.html
The American Bobtail makes a wonderful pet for anyone, even those who would rather have a dog! . They are an intelligent and playful cat that can be trained to fetch and may come when called, if they want to! Great with children and other pets.

British Shorthair
http://www.geocities.com/grete_olden/character.htm
The british shorthaired is usually calm, gentle, affectionate and a little lazy. He loves to play, but wants to decide by him self when, and for how long. You will hear the cat purr a lot, but seldom hear him miaow. In spite of it's size, the british cat has a weak voice. And he only uses his voice when it is necessary and appropriate. (When there's no food left for instance....) He can sometimes be independent and reserved, but can also surprise you by acting as a little kitten - but only for a short time.

I used to have an 'Abby' - Abssynian. They are great cats and awesome pets. They come in several colors and are mostly short hairs although there is a long hair version. They're very smart and very social and friendly. Mine would come running to see me and make a trilling noise when ever I came home.

Good luck - you are making me think of getting a cat! I'm tired of being alone!

11. "RE: Comment on pure breed cats"
In response to message #10

Sorry - I forgot to mention several important points about pure breed cats.

First - you are going to have to spend some real money. You will probably have to buy exotic breeds like you describe from breeders. I don't know the going rates for these cats, but I paid $600 for my 'show quality' Abby back in the late 80's. That's a lot of money even now. But Abby's where new and fairly rare then. The breeder may also require you to agree not to breed the cat unless you are going to pay even more and insist on proof of spaying/neutering in the future. They don't want competition. Clearly, non-show quality cats will be less, but when you are buying them as kittens, the breeder is going to show you the bloodlines and argue that the cat is show quality even if it turns out not be when it's grown.

Second - pure breed cats can have lousy genetics. Siamese cats are legendary for all kinds of problems - deaf, blind and even insane. Yup - beautiful cats that just can't be pets they are so crazy. My Abby died young from kidney problems. The vet said that lots of pure breeds have similar health issues because of excessive in-breeding. So be careful and ask questions of the breeder you buy from and check around - both for price and also quality.

Animal Care and Control near 17th and Harrison... not the SPCA, the city shelter will gas them in a week if they are not adopted, save a life. I got mine there and have had no problems, a wonderful pussy.
