"Secret Hide Out"

I've got a dilemma. Having been the hobby for awhile, I have accumluate certain memoribilia. You know, photos, handwritten messages and other intimate stuff. Its not much, just enough to fill a a shoe box. I keep it locked at work. But there's the problem.

Lately, I thought about what if I died! I don't want to leave this as part of my legacy. I thought about a safe deposit box, but that can be discovered and open in probate. Been thinking about a secret compartment in the wall in the garage, but too Stephen King!

I would appreciate any suggestion?
Tong

   I want to know too...

Although I don't keep much around, It would be good to know if anybody out here is successful in "hiding" certain items/things.

I kinda like the scan and burn it on CDR, but does anybody know how to password protect a directory or a whole CDR???

Typically to password protect an entire CDR or directory you would use a 3rd party product. Use either PGP or a few of the biometric products have file/directory level encryption also.

Standard encryption software package is Steganos. You encrypt your nasty pics onto the carriers of regulars pics. Thus, 1)no one but you will be able to see your private pictures, and 2) you will not arose suspicions about an encrypted disk.

Software works great: 1)128 bit encryption; and 2) doesn't leave obivious marks to generate questions. The theme is to hide in plain site.

About a year ago there was an article in Esquire magazine by a guy who cheated on his wife for over 25 years. Of course he had to hide it, and when it came to objects, he said he always got rid of them. He never kept a gift, letter or anything else. It not only keeps it from others seeing it, but also he didn't want anything sentimental around. I thought that was a pretty good philosophy.

If you just can't toss it out, best to use a secret compartment in the garage or something like that. The garage is an excellent place to hide things. Forget anything electronic.

As for someone seeing them when you die, I rather like the idea someone finding something after I'm gone. Kinda spices up your legacy.

I too would be interested if anyone has a better idea for hiding out stuff.

A couple of comments though...

My feeling is that I don't care if anybody finds things after I am dead...because I am dead. I don't exist anymore. Now those can go off on some existential philisophical treatise now is they want.

Second, for those who hide stuff at work. Remember, you don't have any rights to privacy at work. If you get layoffed and walked, depending on the company, but you can be sure to be searched and the stuff you walk out with searched as well. Now consider that aspect, since being fired is not a great way to start a day as it is.

why keep things? Need phone numbers, figure out a code so you can put them in your Palm/address book, etc. Otherwise, toss it all, right now, before you get caught (alive that is. who cares once your'e dead).

Record important phone numbers in a code. Then burn the rest. And only daydream about the memories. And when someone asks you why you're sitting there smiling, reply, "Oh, nuthin."

Scan/encrypt them and upload them to free service like MSN or Yahoo using a hard to decypher password like "@$%^^Dac@*3r^t". The account should be under a equally hard to decypher name, so nobody can stumble into it. Use duplicate sites, just in case one of the goes under.

THANK YOU, Major Tong I DO have kids & I DO care what they will think about me, after I'm dead !!

The back yard burial (time capsule or locked, inside safe) sounds like a good choice for me & my XXX stuff.

THANKS, for all your help

15. "RE: Rent a storage locker"
In response to message #0

Rent a small storage locker. It's possible to do it without giving them an address. When I was splitting up with my Ex wife, I was worried she would destroy lots of my personal property that had sentimental value. So I rented a storage locker at Public Storage and began to slowly move out boxes of personal stuff that she would wouldn't notice. As I recall, I refused to give them a home phone # or address since I was paranoid about some bozo there accidentally mailing a bill or calling my home. I paid them in cash every month at their office.

If they give you trouble about not supplying home contact info, tell them you are going through a very difficult divorce and you in the process of moving anyway. I gave them an office phone/address and showed them my ID. That's what I did and they accepted it.

Times are so tough right now, I bet you can shop around and will find a place that won't ask for any ID at all, especially if you offer to pay a year up-front. I'm guessing a small locker - closet sized - in a non-prime location might only cost $40/mo. Not a high price for peace of mind.

I would suspect that if you died, they wouldn't get able to get in touch with you or your family and your stuff would be sold or thrown away after you don't pay for a few months.

I've used the storage locker quite frequently, not for things of this nature but don’t want any one to know just the same. Gave them a fake phone # and address. Just have to make sure that the bills paid. I found out that all they do in case of a no pay (after you are gone) that the put an ad in to the paper offering an auction of the entire locker. As long as there in nothing there that identifies you no one will ever know...

lots of good suggestions here for porn files but you're talkin' about memorabilia like old condom wrappers and worn panties, aren't ya?

That stuff just isn't the same scanned. Got to face facts. If you keep it in the house, you're taking a chance. You can always seal a box, put the name of trusted friend on it, and label it "personal". But you never know if it will be opened.

Assuming your obsession doesn't require you to have the stuff always at hand, renting a locker is a good choice.

You can rent a PO box for 20 to 30 bucks a year. Check it once a month and leave your stuff in it, addressed to you. USPS will ask you for a physical address, but they won't verify it. They may check your license. Pay in cash.

They won't mail you a renewal notice, they'll just drop a notice in your box. If you don't pay up in time, they'll change the lock and destroy your stuff.

BIG WARNING: Mailing certain kinds of porn is a serious federal crime!! Don't put anything in the box that could possibly be illegal!!!

Thanks for the great response...

I've decide to stash it behind the electrical panel in the garage - where no woman has gone before. And ever will. Another great place is behind the furnace in take grill.

Think Michigan J. Frog...

Tong - out
