"What's a "Trojan" Look Like?"

Not the condom type the computer type that tracks your keystrokes and then emails them off to someone who wants your passwords, etc. Are there any distinctive symptoms (e.g., delayed keystrokes, hardrive running, etc.)? I keep my virus software up to date but wonder if that's enough.

There is seldom any sign of them as they are designed to operate in stealth mode. Your best bet is to go out on google and find a download of spybot or 'The Cleaner' which are two good trojan detectors/removers.

Besides all of the advertising junk (cookies tracking surfing, etc.) the Cleaner found a Trojan called "Yaha" and wiped it off. Any idea who uses that Trojan and for what?

W32.Yaha.E@mm is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself to all email addresses that exist in the Microsoft Windows Address Book, the MSN Messenger List, the Yahoo Pager list, the ICQ list, and files that have extensions that contain the letters ht. The worm randomly chooses the subject and body of the email message. Depending upon the name of the Recycled folder, the worm either copies itself to that folder or to the %Windows% folder.

McAfee is useless against Yaha. The Cleaner doesn't do the job either (it will identify and remove copies but Yaha just makes more). I tried manually deleting by renaming my Registry Editor as a .com file instead of .exe (any .exe will set off Yaha to make more copies when it is executed) and then tried manually deleting the Yaha files in C:\_Restore\Archive and C:\Recycled but of course access is denied because the little bugger is running while I'm trying to erase it.

Hmmm. Any clever ideas? Do you happen to know the name and address of the Pakistani who authored the thing so I can go rub him out?

For future reference, it is usually best to resolve these sorts of problems by booting to 'safe' mode.
