"New Film: "Center of the World""
There's a new film opening this week in SF/NY/LA called "Center of the World" that will be of more than passing interest to us. I think it opens at the Embarcadero Cinema this Friday.

Here's the synopsis and links to view a trailer and 'official' website. (Their official website is excruciatingly "slow" -- but it's a 'slowness' that is intentional. It's very "artistically cool" and worth the "frustration" IMHO to see what they've done. Hint: As far as I can tell, it's set up like a 'virtual tour' and you have to click on the 'invitations' to proceed further.)

SYNOPSIS:

"Director Wayne Wang creates a steamy portrait of love and sex in the technological age with Center of the World, an erotic drama about a young computer wizard (Peter Sarsgaard, "Boys Don't Cry") whose immersion in the digital world has left him unaccustomed to normal social interaction. When he persuades a beautiful stripper (Molly Parker) to spend three days with him in Las Vegas, their arrangement becomes a journey into the dark secrets of their sexuality. Shot on digital video, the film reunites Wang with "Smoke" and "Blue in the Face" collaborator Paul Auster, who co-wrote the script with his wife, author Siri Hustvedt."

Cherio and Cheers!

1. "RE: New Film: "Center of the World""
This film is also playing at the opening gala of the San Francisco International Film Festival on Thurs, April 19th.

here's the link: http://www.sffs.org/galas.html

You need $$ though, cuz the gala & film is $70/person! Maybe this would be a fun event to take a provider to !? ;)

Looks like a great film. (It's by Wayne Wang, a local director who went to CCAC here in SF)

I hear there's a cameo in it also with Alisha Klass in a stripclub finishing with a lollipop.

Always,

I think Ebert & Roeper just gave it "two thumbs up" in their most recent review, for those who care about that sort of thing.

in contrast, the SF comical -- i mean chronicle -- gave it a very lousy review last friday. the reviewer felt the film's treatment of the main character was demeaning to women.

i haven't seen the movie and don't know if i plan to...

I saw this movie today in Palo Alto -- I liked it. It was pretty even handed and honest in portraying a lot of the psychological dynamics that are involved in "the hobby". How men often want to feel like women are with them more than just for the money... the search for a GFE perhaps? It also shows how women set "limits" to avoid getting emotionally involved in what is ultimately a financial transaction.

Does someone want to explain exactly what was happening during the "fire and ice" sequence?

A good exploration of boundaries in sex work, why they're important, and what kinds of things happen when you're unclear about them (both clients and providers). Lots of little scenes and details that felt very real, like the "what do you do with your hands during a lap dance in a place you've never been before? Oh, right, I'm not supposed to touch her ass; it just felt like the natural thing to do".

And the "I know the IPO is in 4 days but I have just run out all my reserves of energy and tolerance for this bullshit and I have to get the fuck out of here. I'll be back next week" thing.

Lots of little details of geeks and sex work that just felt true.

She does that thing to him after he tells her his
fantasy...i know it involves ice, but what was
the technique she did on him? and why was it
so painful that he told her to stop???
